Seashells decorated with decoupage and gold marker

Make elegant little seashell bowls with decoupage paper that are perfect for holding trinkets and jewellery. The shells are decorated with decoupage in beautiful designs, while the edges are coloured with a gold marker. The technique is inspired by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi that celebrates the beauty of the imperfect.

How to do it
1 Wash the shells well in soapy water.
2 Dry thoroughly.
3 Place the shell on top of whichever design you choose.
4 Trace around the shell with a pencil approx. 2-1.5 cm from the edge.
5 Cut along the drawn line.
6 Apply glue to the shell.
7 Spread it all over the inside of the shell in a thin layer.
8 Place the decoupage paper onto the shell and press gently with your hands to make it stick.
9 Add a little glue to the shell again and spread a thin layer across the decoupage paper. Allow the glue to dry.
10 Cut off the excess paper.
11 Add glue to the edge so that the decoupage paper fits smoothly. This is important for the gold edging that is added later on. Allow the glue to dry.
12 If you only want to use one of the small prints, it does not have to cover the entire shell. Cut out whichever design you like.
13 Apply glue where you want the print to be placed and press it down gently with your fingers.
14 Brush a thin layer of glue on top of the design and allow to dry.
15 Finish the shells by colouring the edge with a gold marker and allow to dry.
