Papier-mâche Boxes decorated with Fabric Decoupage

1 Measure the fabric around the sides and the base of the box.

2 Apply a coat of decoupage lacquer for fabric onto the sides of the box and attach the fabric.

3 Apply decoupage lacquer for fabric onto the inside of the box along the edge and fold the fabric onto the inside of the box. Alternatively trim the fabric along the edges of the box.

4 Fold the edges underneath the bottom of the box.

5 Attach a piece of fabric onto the bottom of the box using decoupage lacquer for fabric.

6 Cut out the fabric for the box lid using the template which you may print from the PDF file attached on this page. Apply decoupage lacquer for fabric onto the lid and place either polyester stuffing/wadding on top of the box lid. Apply another coat of decoupage lacquer for fabric (also along the edges) and place (a piece of) patchwork fabric on top.

7 Fold in the edges.

8 Attach a piece of ribbon along the edge of the box lid using decoupage lacquer for fabric.

9 Cut pieces of fabric for the round box lids using the template in the PDF file attached on this page. Apply a coat of decoupage lacquer onto the lid and place either polyester stuffing or polyester wadding on top. Apply a coat of decoupage lacquer for fabric along the edges and place a piece of patchwork fabric on top.

10 Apply another coat of decoupage lacquer for fabric onto the lids and the boxes, making them dirt resistant.

11 Fix a metal stud in the middle of each lid by making a hole with an awl (use a board as an underlay).

12 Separate the two-part metal stud and fix it into the hole.

13 Leave the box and the lid to dry completely before putting the lid on.
