Key ring using punch needle technique

1 Cut around the outside edge of the template.

2 Place the template in the middle of the embroidery fabric and trace along the edge.

3 Remove the template and cut out everything marked 2. Now position the template so that it aligns with the outline you have drawn. Next, draw along the edge of what you have just cut out that was marked 2.

4 Cut out the rest of the pattern and trace the outline in the centre of the pattern.

5 Now thread the needle: Thread the needle through the tip and all the way to the top of the needle. Next, thread the yarn through the loop of the needle threader and pull so that the yarn reaches all the way down through the needle.

6 Insert the needle threader through the small hole in the tip of the needle and thread the yarn through the loop of the needle threader. Now pull the yarn through the tip of the needle. The needle is now threaded.

Set the needle length to 5 (the longer the needle, the larger the loops)

7 Attach the embroidery fabric to the embroidery frame. Once the fabric is tight, you can start to punch needle.
Punch needle with a stitch length of approx. 2–3 mm and insert the needle almost all the way down every time. Start along the edge of the pattern and work your way towards the middle.

Important: Leave 1.5 cm around the outer edge of the pattern for the embroidery seam allowance.

8 Once the pattern is filled with yarn, cut along the outer edge (embroidery seam allowance). Now adhere the backside by applying a generous amount of glue with a brush and allow the glue to dry.

9 Next, cut small notches in the embroidery seam allowance inwards towards the edge of the embroidery. Leave a gap of approx. 1 cm between each notch all the way around.

10 Fold in all the edges and attach them with a layer of glue. Allow the glue to dry.

11 Once the glue is dry, cut around 10 cm of satin ribbon. Fold the satin ribbon in half and sew it onto the back of the embroidery. Make sure that around 1 cm of folded satin ribbon extends beyond the edge of the embroidery for the key ring handle.

12 Place the finished embroidery on top of the felt. Draw the outline of the embroidery pattern on the felt and cut it out.

13 Glue the felt to the back of the embroidery with a thick layer of glue and allow to dry. Insert the key ring into the loop of the satin ribbon to finish.
