Portraits as Sculptures made from a Balloon with Gauze Bandage

Children's existential and spatial intelligence is enhanced by this creative project by combining history and art. When learning about Easter Island and the large statues of volcanic stone, children experience differences in art, culture and the people (life-wise). The children must then attempt to create their own statue/sculpture (on a smaller scale) from gauze bandage. Children's spatial intelligence is enhanced by making models from gauze bandage (image-wise).

How to do it Download the templates/recipes
1 Cut the lower part of a milk carton and use it as a mould to make a stand for the sculpture, filling it with casting compound. Insert a shortened balloon stick with a balloon holder at each end.
2 Now cast a stand in the milk carton by filling it with casting compound. Leave to dry for 24 to 48 hours.
3 Inflate the balloon, tie a knot and secure the balloon in the holder. Now cover/model the balloon with three or four layers of wet gauze bandage. NB: Be thorough when covering the balloon stick to ensure that the transition is smooth and the sculpture will be stable.
4 Leave to dry for 24 to 48 hours. You may then paint it with Art School acrylic paint.
